The Conference Venue
City of Opava
The town of Opava belongs to the old settlement areas, we have evidence of this already from the older Stone Age. The medieval settlement probably originated here in the 12th century as a merchant settlement on the trade route from Moravia to Poland, which was part of the Amber Route. The first written mention of Opava's existence dates back to 1195, and it is mentioned as a town in Přemysl Otakar I's decree of 1224. Thanks to its rich history, it became not only a town of nobility, Silesian provincial government, a religious, cultural and commercial centre, but also a centre of education in Silesia.
All this is evidenced by several attractions of the city, such as the oldest museum in Central Europe, the Cathedral of the Assumption as the largest surviving example of Silesian Gothic, the oldest multicultural festival in the Czech Republic, the oldest American-style department store, historic headquarters of the Chamber of Commerce called Hláska a scale model of the solar system and the most beautiful railway station in 2012.

The university and the institute
The Silesian University in Opava belongs among top five universities created after 1989. Since its foundation in 1991, the university provides students with comprehensive education in the fields of mathematics, physics, history, literature, languages, economy, gastronomy, pedagogy, health care, public administration, and the arts. Currently, the Silesian University in Opava has three faculties – the Faculty of Philosophy and Science in Opava, the School of Business Administration in Karvina, the Faculty of Public Policies in Opava – and two university institutes – the Mathematical Institute in Opava and the Institute of Physics in Opava.
Institute of Computer Science is part of Faculty of Philosophy and Science in Opava since 1998 and as such celebrated 20 years of existance in an academic year 2018/2019. We specialize in Theoretical Computer Science including unconventional and bio-inspired computing (DNA computing, membrane computing - P systems), multi-agent systems and grammar systems; and further in Applied Computer Science: medical image processing, computer vision, robot and drone control. Our institute is very proud to welcome in the year 2023 our esteemed colleagues from all over the world for the annual conference CMC!
Nearby sights
In addition to these attractions, there are many fairytale castles in the area, for example in Hradec nad Moravicí, Radun, Stěbořice, Kravaře, Linhartovy, Slezské Rudoltice, Velké Losiny and many others, or monuments from the Second World War, such as the Czechoslovak fortification line or the National Memorial of World War II, originally built for the victims of one of the fiercest battles. Ostrava, only 30 kilometres away, offers many technical monuments too.

Recommendations for pastime activities
For relaxation, we recommend a walk along the Opava River, a visit to the Municipal Park "Městské Sady", a shared bike ride along the cycle path to the Otice Volcano or swimming in the nearby Silver Lake. If you are not adventurous nor sporty, a very common and popular Czech pastime during the summer months is relaxing in restaurant gardens with a glass of cold beer.

Getting to the Conference
There are several airports located near the conference venue. From the airport, we recommend taking a bus or train to Ostrava, from where there are regular and frequent connections to Opava. To find connections from the airport, see also Travel by train or bus.
Airports in the Czech Republic
- Ostrava - nearest airport (about 40 km) to the conference venue,

Connections: Part of the airport is the train station Mošnov - Ostrava Airport, from which you can take regular bus or train to Ostrava-Svinov (it can take approx. 1 hour). From here you can take the train directly to Opava East (Opava Východ). - Prague - largest airport in Czech Republic, about 400 km from conference venue

Connections: Here it is best to move from the airport by train (the station is a part the airport) and continue by direct train to Ostrava-Svinov (it can take approx. 3 hours). From there continue by another train to Opava.
Travel by train or bus
The Czech Republic has a good train and bus network. The fastest and most comfortable way to transport from Ostrava to Opava is by train, but there are also direct buses. Train and bus timetables can be found on the website https://idos.idnes.cz/. This idos app also allows you to buy tickets. Train tickets can also be bought at train stations and bus tickets at vending machines at bus stops or, if there are none, directly on buses (usually by cash to the driver or by credit card at the machine).
In the city of Opava, it is possible to use public transport for short transfers, see https://www.mdpo.cz/jizdni-rady for maps, timetables, and more information. Individual ticket costs around CZK 30 and can be paid by card directly on the buses. The closest bus stop to the conference venue is Opava, Olbrichova (5 minutes walk). Also railway station Opava-East (Opava-Východ) is close to the conference venue (15 minutes walk).
Accommodation
The city of Opava offers many accommodation options in different price range. Recommended hotels located right in the city center include the popular Hotel Kramer, Hotel Iberia and Hotel Koruna. All hotels are within a 10-minute walk of the conference venue. Another option for the guests of faculties are university dormitories, which are located directly in the area of the conference venue.
